A Tiny Square Of Grayson Perry Fabric.
It turns out we saw a lot of Grayson Perry exhibitions.

Whenever I saw Sarah she would usually hand over a bundle of stuff she was clearing out and she thought I might want, this small square of fabric was in one of those bundles. I framed the square as a background to the Grayson Perry face mask I bought during lockdown, which has been mounted like a butterfly so the fabric can also be seen.
The photograph in the top image was taken in 2023 on my 50th birthday when we went to see the Grayson Perry exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. The second photo was another Grayson Perry exhibition in Edinburgh, at Dovecot, 2019. You can also see a wee sneak peek of a Jen Robson print, but we’ll get to that other day. And the red figure is the top of a bookmark I got when I was with Sarah in Manchester when we went to see yet another Grayson Perry exhibition in 2021.
I think Sarah got the fabric on Ebay and had used part of it to patch a hole or decorate some clothing, I can’t really remember. I was obviously much more precious about it the she was.

Sarah rarely took photos of art she liked, choosing to examine them through drawing instead. This is something we used to do together when I still lived in Edinburgh in the 90’s. We used to head to the National Museum of Scotland’s Egyptology department and sketch ancient objects. With the arrival of phone cameras, I got lazy, she did not.
In the second image we didn’t manage to coordinate who’s camera we were looking at hahaha! Pair o bams.
I can guarantee we’ll see more Grayson Perry related stuff, but for today this is the story and connections of a small piece of cloth.
I hope you enjoy these tales of friendship.
I love how the fabric has special meaning to you and how small objects can bring us so much joy and bring back those emotions from the time
